Meaning – CERN, stands for Conseil EuropÈen pour la Recherche NuclÈaire, and is the world’s authoritative body on all the research pertaining to nuclear research. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and is the first location in the world to have created a web server.
CERN is also credited with having initiated the World Wide Web, which, in itself, is an amazing achievement. Even today, the CERN web server is the basis for all new web servers that come out, anywhere in the world.
The instruments used at CERN are purpose-built particle accelerators and detectors. Accelerators boost beams of particles to high energies before the beams are made to collide with each other or with stationary targets. Detectors observe and record the results of these collisions.
