For the first time, Dota 2’s The International will be held in Southeast Asia

The International, Dota 2’s annual tournament, will be held in Singapore in October. While Valve has previously conducted The International in the United States, Canada, China, Germany, and Romania, this is the first time the global esports championship will be held in Southeast Asia.

Valve mentioned the impending event in a tweet but provided no further specifics other than the venue and date. The competition is recognized for its substantial awards, with the victorious team from the previous year receiving a share of the $40 million prize pool. That massive sum was raised through in-game purchases made by the Dota 2 community and has only grown over time. We don’t know how much money will be up for grabs at this year’s competition, but we won’t have to wait long to find out.

The International was expected to make its Swedish debut last year after the 2020 event in Stockholm, Sweden was postponed due to the COVID-19 epidemic. However, due to complications with Swedish authorities, the event was forced to be relocated to Bucharest, Romania. Things did not go as planned in Bucharest, too, as Valve was forced to run the competition without a live audience due to an increase in COVID-19 cases.
