Fernando Alonso is concerned about the reliability of Aston Martin’s DRS system, which has been causing issues for the team throughout the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend. While the Spanish driver made it through Saturday’s sprint race without any DRS problems, he remains wary that it may not be “bulletproof into the race”.
During Friday’s qualifying session, both Alonso and teammate Lance Stroll struggled with DRS issues, with the team-mates finishing only P6 and P9 respectively. Although the team worked on the problem, Alonso had to give Stroll the tow during the sprint race in an attempt to help him find tenths when his DRS failed again.
Although Stroll’s DRS failed him yet again during the sprint race, the team-mates managed to finish sixth and eighth. However, Alonso believes that Aston Martin cannot be completely confident that their AMR23’s DRS will work during Sunday’s race.
“That (the DRS) is the topic this weekend in our team. We’ve had problems every session,” Alonso said.
“We cannot be 100 percent sure (it is fixed). I don’t think the system is bulletproof into the race, but it is the way it is.
“If we have some tweaks to do we have another chance before the race.
“But even with the DRS it seems very difficult to overtake when you are following so maybe it’s not the key factor even if it doesn’t work.”
