Face ID with Masks

Apple is improving its Face ID feature to make it compatible with masks. Because the function verifies your identity using a smaller section of your face, you’ll need to be more accurate with the angle you hold your phone when using Face ID. Your phone will even prompt you if it requires you to look at the screen more directly. The revised feature should work for individuals who wear glasses but will not work for individuals who use sunglasses.

As long as you have an iPhone 12 or 13 running iOS 15.4, you can quickly enable the new setting, which uses the features around your eyes to authenticate that you are, in fact, you, even when wearing a mask.

However, if you own an older iPhone model or prefer not to update to iOS 15.4, there is another way to unlock your iPhone while wearing a mask — using your Apple Watch.
