Darkest Dungeon Sets a New Sales Record

Darkest Dungeon has received several awards and milestones since its official full release in 2016. Red Hook Studios sold over a million copies across all platforms in 2016, demonstrating that the game has been in high demand since its inception. This year, the game reaches another significant milestone as sales continue to rise.

Fans of Darkest Dungeon continue to look for a rogue-lite fix, with its sequel still in early access at the time of writing. Even sales from the original game are still moving today, thanks to the fan support and exposure the intellectual property has acquired since its Kickstarter launch in 2014.

During a development update on the progress of Darkest Dungeon 2, it was reported that the first game had recently achieved “an astounding milestone of 6 million copies” sold, with an extra byline claiming that the game had sold 16 million copies altogether, including the game’s downloadable content.

The basic game has already sold 5 million copies as of September 2021. That’s about a million copies sold every year since its introduction in 2016, so it’s hardly surprising that after another year, another million units were sold, bringing the total sales to 6 million. Given that mod support for Darkest Dungeon is still highly active, interest in the game seems to be very substantial. Even after introducing and effectively implementing a slew of novel gaming concepts, the gameplay remains unparalleled.

While Darkest Dungeon 2’s early access is currently only available on Microsoft Windows, individuals wishing for a dungeon-crawler rogue-like with unrivalled harsh difficulty may acquire the first Darkest Dungeon and its DLCs on platforms other than Windows. From home consoles like Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to handhelds like iOS and Nintendo Switch, buyers have many alternatives for purchasing the game on low-cost devices while waiting for the sequel.

Darkest Dungeon has also inspired a plethora of DLCs and various spin-offs, which have all added to the game’s ongoing success. The most recent update included free content dubbed “Butcher’s Circus,” which adds a player-versus-player game inside Darkest Dungeon, increasing replayability. This, together with the board game spin-off, has increased the brand’s value and name recall. Darkest Dungeon 2 is still in its early stages and will have to stand the test of time to see whether it can outdo or even equal the previous game. However, the original game continues to hit milestones that will ensure the IP’s longevity.
