Corsair Bolsters Mechanical Keyboard Lineup with Acquisition of Drop

Corsair, a prominent player in the enthusiast keyboard market, is aiming to strengthen its position by acquiring Drop (formerly Massdrop), a well-known brand recognized for its customizable mechanical keyboards and key switches. This acquisition will allow Corsair to expand Drop’s community-centric keyboard line while leveraging its capabilities to develop new products for its in-house brands, including Elgato.

Under the terms of the deal, Drop will continue to operate as a separate brand within Corsair, managing all existing purchases and customer support. The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed. Drop’s CEO assured users that the company would continue collaborating with community favorites while improving its ability to serve customers outside of the United States.

This strategic move aligns with the growing trend among gamers and enthusiasts who seek personalized and customizable keyboards with unique key caps, lighting, and switches. By acquiring Drop, Corsair gains a quick entry into this market segment, bypassing the need to build its own resources or face Drop as a competitor.

The enthusiast keyboard space is fiercely competitive, with companies like Keychron, KBDFans, and Mode offering customizable options. Established tech giants such as ASUS and NZXT are also increasingly venturing into this domain. While Corsair may not guarantee dominance, the acquisition of Drop positions the company to thrive in a field where personalization holds significant value.

Additionally, this acquisition may enable Corsair to introduce personalization to other segments where it is less common. Content creators, including game streamers, often prioritize elaborate setups, yet their broadcasting equipment, such as control decks and microphones, rarely offer extensive customization options. The future product releases from Elgato, a brand under Corsair, could potentially provide an edge over competitors in this space, although specific details are currently undisclosed.
