Comixology’s Marvel Comics App to Close Its Doors in June, Leaving Fans Searching for Alternatives

Comic book fans who have been using Comixology’s Marvel Comics app to read their favorite titles will soon have to find an alternative. Marvel announced that the app will shut down on June 2nd, leaving fans with just over a month to transition to the company’s self-operated Marvel Unlimited app.

Thankfully, fans who have already purchased issues through the Comixology Marvel Comics app will still have access to their purchases in the Marvel Unlimited app. The cutoff date for new purchases in the old app is May 2nd, so fans have until then to make any final purchases before the shutdown.

Android users who bought digital comics through the Comixology Marvel Comics app will have an easy transition to Marvel Unlimited, as they already required a Marvel account. However, iOS users will need to link a Marvel account to the old app to access their old purchases in the new app.

Marvel is offering a discounted price of $5 per month for the first year with a coupon code to entice fans to buy into its subscription service, Marvel Unlimited. The service offers access to over 30,000 issues from the Marvel universe, with a three-month delay between an issue’s initial release and its availability on the platform.

The shutdown of Comixology’s Marvel Comics app comes several months after layoffs at Amazon, which owns Comixology, reportedly hit the comic storefront particularly hard. While fans will need to make the switch to the Marvel Unlimited app, they can rest assured that their purchases will still be available and that the company is offering a discounted subscription service to continue reading their favorite titles.
