BMW’s X2 M35i Takes on Off-Road Challenge in Rebelle Rally Transformation

A Sporty Crossover Modified for Rugged Adventure

While BMW has traditionally steered clear of the lucrative off-road SUV segment, its latest move might suggest a change in direction. In the competitive arena of sport utility vehicles, BMW’s counterpart, Mercedes-Benz, has reaped substantial profits with its iconic G-Class. Now, the three-pointed star is eyeing a smaller version of this legendary off-roader, aiming to capitalize on the Geländewagen’s success. On the other side of this fierce rivalry, BMW has primarily focused on performance-oriented crossovers and SUVs, culminating in the controversial XM plug-in hybrid.

Among BMW’s array of sporty X models, the recently introduced X2 in the M35i specification has emerged as a standout. While it’s primarily designed for on-road performance, it has undergone a noteworthy transformation to compete in the Rebelle Rally, an eight-day off-road competition that unfolds over 1,300 miles through challenging terrain in the deserts of California and Nevada.

To adapt the M35i for this demanding rally, extensive modifications were made. Although it doesn’t sport portal axles or a massive suspension lift, the changes are substantial. Notable upgrades include Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires, Rotiform ZMO-M wheels, and underbody protection with a skid plate.

The M Performance X2 also features a range of other enhancements, from additional lighting at the front and rear to a Thule roof rack. Its striking Frozen Portimao Blue finish, a matte color from the Individual catalog, is complemented by paint protection film to safeguard the swoopy body. This rally-ready M35i is equipped with tow straps from the M Performance Parts catalog and a spare tire carrier in the cargo area. Additional off-road prowess is provided by Smittybilt off-road recovery gear and accessories, along with a TerraTrip external odometer.

In this year’s Rebelle Rally, the longest off-road rally competition in the United States, the compact yet potent BMW X2 M35i is competing in the X-Cross class. Behind the wheel is Rebecca Donaghe, with Sedona Blinson navigating the challenging course. The rally began on October 12 and will conclude on Saturday, October 21.

It’s worth noting that the X2 M35i sold in the United States packs more power than its European counterpart, thanks to a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine delivering 312 horsepower. This boost in power is a response to stricter emissions regulations, and while the European version is limited to 296 hp, torque remains a robust 295 lb-ft (400 Nm).

BMW’s bold step into the Rebelle Rally showcases the brand’s versatility and willingness to push the boundaries, even in the realm of sporty crossovers.
