Apple is reportedly in the process of developing an emergency patch for the recently launched iOS 16.4 in an effort to address several bugs that have been reported by users. Although it is not set in stone, indications suggest that the upcoming update, iOS 16.4.1, may be targeting issues with the Weather app, which has been displaying “Weather Unavailable” messages on the widget, rendering it useless for many users. Apple appears to be aware of this issue, as the company’s System Status page lists the Weather service as experiencing ongoing problems that may make it “slow or unavailable” to some users.
The second problem that is expected to be resolved in the upcoming patch is the sudden forgetfulness of Wi-Fi networks and passwords in iOS 16.4, which has forced iPhone users to re-enter their information. According to one Twitter user, this error occurs when a connection is lost or when the user switches networks, even if the information is synced via iCloud.
The remainder of the changes that will be introduced in iOS 16.4.1 are uncertain, but there are some clues. Some users have reported their phones heating up while charging, as well as decreased battery performance. While some in the Apple Community forums suggest that this may be a feature and not a bug, as the device may take up to 48 hours to complete all necessary background tasks post-update, others point out that battery drain has been a persistent issue since the launch of iOS 16, suggesting that it may be an oversight on Apple’s part.
It is currently unclear when iOS 16.4.1 will be released, but a recent report by MacRumors suggests that it may be available later this week or early next week. Meanwhile, the first iOS 16.5 beta has been released for developers to explore, with its contents shrouded in mystery. However, there are some indications that the Apple News app will be receiving a new Sports tab, which will be situated between News Plus and Audio, while the Following and Search tabs will be merged to create more space. Additionally, iPhone users may be given the ability to record their screens using Siri.
Later this year, Apple is expected to unveil iOS 17, which will feature major upgrades to first-party features like CarPlay. TechRadar has already published an iOS 17 roundup, as well as a wish list for the update.
