With transcripts, listeners can now delve into the full textual representation of an episode, allowing them to read along or search for specific words or phrases within the content. This added functionality not only enhances the overall experience but also empowers users to engage with podcasts in a more meaningful way.

As Sarah Herrlinger, Apple’s senior director of Global Accessibility Policy & Initiatives, eloquently stated, “Introducing transcripts on Apple Podcasts builds on Apple’s commitment to making products and services for everyone. We are thrilled to make transcripts widely available for all, adding an additional layer of accessibility to the Podcasts experience.”

The transcripts feature offers a multitude of benefits to users. For those who prefer to follow along with the spoken word, the transcripts provide a seamless experience, with each word being highlighted as the episode plays, making it easier to keep up with the content. Additionally, language learners can leverage transcripts to enhance their comprehension and vocabulary, while users seeking specific information can quickly locate facts or quotes they heard during an episode.

Accessibility remains at the forefront of this update, with the design of the transcripts carefully crafted to ensure optimal readability. The font and color contrast have been thoughtfully chosen to make long-form text easier to scan and read, catering to diverse needs and preferences. Moreover, users who are Deaf or hard of hearing can access the transcripts without the need to press play, further exemplifying Apple’s commitment to inclusivity.

Starting today, transcripts are available for English, French, Spanish, and German-language podcasts on iPhone and iPad devices running iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4, respectively. It’s important to note that the transcripts will not offer translations from one language to another. However, transcripts will be automatically available for new episodes shortly after they are published, while previously released episodes will be transcribed over time.

Recognizing the preferences of content creators, Apple has also accommodated those who prefer to provide their own transcripts. Creators can do so through RSS tags or in Apple Podcasts Connect for subscriber episodes, ensuring a seamless integration of their content with the new transcription feature.

With transcripts available in over 170 countries and regions, Apple’s latest offering is poised to revolutionize the way audiences engage with podcasts, opening up new avenues for accessibility, comprehension, and user-friendly experiences across the globe.
