Android 15 Codename Revealed: Google’s Next OS to be Named ‘Vanilla Ice Cream’

Google is still utilising dessert-themed codenames for new versions of Android after all these years. The ritual will continue at least until 2024, according to a new codename discovered this week. Freelance writer Mishaal Rahman recently tweeted that Google’s test framework contains references to Vanilla Ice Cream, the codename for Android 15.

The timing of this announcement is odd, given that the first Android 14 developer preview was released less than a month ago. (In case you didn’t know, Android 14’s codename is Upside Down Cake.) The official release of Android 14 isn’t scheduled until August, but we’re already seeing huge leaks about Android 15.

“If you believe this is *really really* early, it isn’t,” Rahman stated. “There will always be feature ideas/concepts that Google wants to incorporate but there isn’t enough time to add it to the current release, so they either plan ahead for the next one or punt it.”

He continues by saying that these codenames are meaningless since they have nothing to do with the real substance of the release. Still, it is a leak concerning the world’s most popular operating system, so many people will be intrigued.

Cupcake, Donut, Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, Lollipop, Marshmallow, KitKat, and Oreo were some of the previous Android codenames.
