A strike by nearly a thousand Amazon workers at one of the company’s UK warehouses could impact some Amazon Prime Day deliveries. The GMB labour union announced the strike, which is taking place at the Coventry warehouse, in a dispute over pay.
The three-day strike, scheduled for July 11-13, will coincide with the entire Amazon Prime Day event. However, Amazon stated that the Coventry site does not directly handle customer orders, so there should be no disruption to customers.
The strike will occur for two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening on each of the three days. The workers are demanding £15 per hour and union rights.
This is not the first time that staff at the Coventry site have taken industrial action. They participated in Amazon UK’s first-ever employee walkout in January 2023. The strike is another setback for Amazon as it faces challenges on multiple fronts in the UK and abroad.
Earlier this year, the company announced significant job cuts across its business, including its AWS cloud services division, affecting approximately 27,000 employees. These developments have contributed to Amazon’s image being scrutinized as it navigates various issues in the UK and globally.
