Amazfit’s New Cheetah Watches Could Give Garmin a Run for Its Money

Smartwatch brand Amazfit has recently introduced two new wearables tailored specifically for runners: the Cheetah and Cheetah Pro. These watches come with a unique feature—a generative AI called Zepp Coach—that creates personalized running plans for users. By inputting relevant information into the Zepp mobile app, such as personal characteristics and goals, users receive workout routines customized to their needs. These plans can even assist in preparing for races, as the smartwatches adjust the training regimen each week to push users further.

While other brands, like Huawei, have previously integrated AI coaches into their smartwatches, Amazfit takes it a step further. The Zepp Coach smartphone app now includes an AI Chat tool that functions as a fitness-oriented chatbot, offering users 24/7 support akin to having a personal trainer. However, this chatbot will only be available as a “short demo period” in select regions before transitioning to a subscription-based service.

To aid workouts, both Cheetah wearables are equipped with MaxTrack, a highly accurate GPS technology capable of tracking runners even amidst environmental obstacles like tall buildings or trees. Users can import collected GPS data from the Zepp app to create custom running routes, and overlay the routes on the device’s Offline Map to explore nearby alternatives.

Additional features of the Cheetah line include a heart rate tracker and the ability to share running routes through third-party apps like Google Fit. The battery life of the devices can last up to two weeks on a single charge, but heavy usage may reduce it to about a week.

Distinguishing the two models are variations in specifications and exclusive features. Both watches feature an HD AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 1,000 nits for clear readability even under direct sunlight. The Cheetah Pro boasts a larger 1.45-inch screen with a resolution of 480 x 480 pixels, while the base Cheetah model has a slightly smaller 1.39-inch screen with a resolution of 454 x 452 pixels. The Cheetah Pro also supports Bluetooth calling and offline music playback, accessible through connected headphones or the on-device speaker.

The Amazfit Cheetah, available in Speedster Grey, can be purchased for $229.99/£229.90 from the company’s website. The Cheetah Pro is a variant of the base Cheetah model, featuring a square-shaped watch face.

It remains to be seen how Garmin will respond to the Cheetah series, considering the introduction of generative AI in competitors’ wearables. Perhaps the next Forerunner model will feature an OpenAI-powered chatbot, signaling further advancements in smartwatch technology.
