Haas Formula 1 Team Adopts Red Bull-Style Aerodynamic Approach in Bid for Improved Performance

Haas Unveils Significant Aerodynamic Upgrade Package to Revamp Performance in Formula 1

The Haas Formula 1 team has unveiled a major aerodynamic upgrade package, embracing a Red Bull-inspired approach to enhance their performance in the sport. Facing recent struggles and having only scored four points since the last Formula 1 race in Miami back in May, Haas is pinning its hopes on this substantial update.

The most noticeable change in the upgrade is the transformation of the sidepod inlets into a ‘letterbox’ shape, a design approach similar to that employed by the front-running Red Bull team. This adaptation aligns with the ‘downwash’ concept, which has proven highly successful in optimizing aerodynamics.

Photographs taken by well-respected paddock journalists Albert Fabrega and Andreas Haupt provide a glimpse of the redesigned sidepods, accompanied by a less visible floor update. These changes represent a significant departure from the concept with which Haas started the season.

Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner explained that the aerodynamic upgrade was born out of necessity. The team sought to revamp their performance, especially after encountering challenges in recent races. Steiner acknowledged that the changes made in accordance with the new regulations last year had not yielded the expected gains in performance.

The fundamental goal of the upgrades is to increase downforce and reduce drag. Haas has opted for what is commonly referred to as the “Red Bull concept” or the “downwash concept.” This approach aims to generate a higher level of downforce, which is vital for improving a Formula 1 car’s grip and cornering capabilities.

Steiner further emphasized the significance of these upgrades and noted that they were developed within the cost cap framework. He clarified that the team had refrained from earlier updates in the season because the performance gains were elusive. This new approach represents a crucial turning point for Haas as they strive to enhance their competitiveness and achieve better results in the remainder of the Formula 1 season.
