Google has released the Chrome OS M115 update, expanding Android app streaming to a wider user base on Chromebooks. This update allows many more people to access Android apps directly from their mobile devices through Phone Hub, without the need to install the apps on their computers. Users can now reply to messages and check notifications without getting distracted by reaching for their handsets.
The feature, while now available to more users, is still limited to a select group of Android 13-capable phones from Google and Xiaomi. Google Pixel 4a and later models are compatible, while Xiaomi users need at least a 12T model. Both the Chromebook and the phone must be connected to the same WiFi network and located physically close to each other. While some networks may not support the feature, Chrome OS’ Instant Tethering can establish a link if required.
It’s worth noting that app streaming is not suitable for games or resource-intensive Android apps. It is primarily intended for handling notifications and quick responses. For more substantial tasks, users are still encouraged to install the apps on their Chromebooks. This update brings Chromebooks closer to the phone integration found in macOS and Windows, enhancing productivity and focus while working.
In addition to Android app streaming, the M115 update introduces several other improvements. Users can now sign PDF documents and save signatures for future use. Moreover, Google has redesigned the Shortcut app with a new interface and a more user-friendly in-app search, catering to keyboard-oriented users.
Overall, the Chrome OS M115 update enhances the usability and functionality of Chromebooks, making it easier for users to stay connected and productive across their devices.
