Jenson Button Believes British Drivers Can Challenge for Podium at Silverstone

Former F1 champion predicts Lewis Hamilton or George Russell to fight for podium positions at the British Grand Prix

Jenson Button, the former Formula 1 champion, has expressed his belief that at least one of the British drivers will be in contention for a podium finish at their home race at Silverstone. With Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, and Lando Norris representing the British contingent on the grid in 2023, Button thinks they have the potential to challenge for a top-three finish.

While Button considers Max Verstappen the favorite to win the race due to his dominant form and the superiority of his car, he expects the British drivers to be in the mix for podium positions. Button, who previously drove for the Brackley-based team now known as Mercedes, believes Hamilton and Russell will be strong contenders for the podium, although he acknowledges that McLaren’s Lando Norris also looks competitive.

“I think Max, you know, he’s just dominant at the moment, the car is also dominant,” Button told On Track GP, the YouTube channel launched in partnership between PlanetF1.com and DR Sports. “I think that one of the Brits will be in second or third. So I’m thinking it’s more likely going to be Lewis and George than Lando, but the McLaren does look strong as well.”

Despite Mercedes’ apparent struggles in free practice on Friday and their recent performance issues in Austria, Button believes the team will be able to find their pace and challenge for a podium finish at Silverstone. He hopes to see Hamilton and Russell fighting for a top-three position, considering it a great spectacle for the fans.

Button, who currently serves as a senior advisor for Williams, also expressed his optimism about the team’s progress. With both Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant showcasing strong performances during Friday’s practice sessions, Button believes Williams has the potential to climb up in the Constructors’ Championship. He praised the team’s progress and highlighted the improved correlation between their wind tunnel data and on-track performance, which makes it easier to develop the car.

Button concluded by stating that eighth place in the championship is definitely within reach for Williams, and potentially even seventh place if their progress continues. He commended Albon’s performance in Montreal and highlighted the mental challenges of defending a position in Formula 1. Button expressed his admiration for the team’s progress and the positive impact of improved infrastructure on their development process.
