The origin story of Telegram Messenger

The Durov brothers launched Telegram in 2013 as a way to communicate with one another (Nikolai Durov and Pavel Durov). They were previously recognised for being the founders of the Russian social networking site VK, which was later purchased by the Mail.ru media conglomerate.

The two brothers took a methodical approach to building the Telegram messenger after they were expelled from VK. While Nikolai concentrated on developing the MTProto protocol (which is now known as the Telegram Messenger’s backbone), Pavel concentrated on the financial aspects of the project by providing funds from his Digital fortress fund and bringing on board his business partner at the time, Axel Neff, as a second co-founder.
