Meaning – The term pointing device, refers to an input device with which a user interacts with a computer. A mouse is one example of a pointing device.
Using a pointing device, you can point at or manipulate any object or text on the screen. For example, using a pointing device you could point at and select an icon from a list of icons.
For desktop computers, the most common pointing device is the computer mouse. For laptop computers, the most common pointing device is the touchpad.
In the case of a direct-input pointing device, the on-screen pointer is at the same physical position as the pointing device. An indirect-input pointing device is not at the same physical position as the pointer but translates its movement onto the screen
Example of usage – “Pointing devices send information to the computer and do not receive any information from the computer which makes them input devices.”
