Meaning – The term offset, refers to the number of measuring units from an arbitrary starting point in a record, area, or control block, to some other point. Usually, when a product is being designed, or when the designer is working on some UI elements, it is important to note the desired offset between the various parts of the UI element and the offset between the UI element with the rest of the design.
The term offset is also used to gauge the performance of the employees, by checking the offset of their work against the chosen benchmark and ranking them accordingly. This approach is said to be very objective and there have been cases where the decision taken by the organization, using this method, has actually led to the loss of talent.
Example of usage – “When she was designing the UI for the software package, she had to follow the offset guidelines put forward by the client in the creative brief.”
