Notifications are usually denoted by a preselected tone, that allows the user to identify the source of the notification, without actually turning on the device. This allows for more productivity and fewer distractions at work.
Today, smartphones and computers allow users to customize the way they receive notifications and also how often they receive notification alerts. There are dedicated modes in the devices that allow you to mute notifications while at work so that you can catch up once you are free.
