Meaning – The term host, refers to the computer that is connected to a network (such as the Internet or an SNA network) and provides an access point to that network. Also, depending on the environment, the host may provide centralized control of the network. The host can be a client, a server, or both a client and a server simultaneously.
In a Tivoli environment, the term host is referred to as a computer that serves as a managed node for a profile distribution.
The terms host and server are often used interchangeably, but they are two different things. All servers are hosts, but not all hosts are servers.
Example of usage – “Depending on the network protocol, a computer’s hostname may be a domain name, IP address, or simply a unique text string.”
