Folder

Meaning – The term folder, in the context of computing, is similar to a physical folder. Both of them are used to store files. In a physical folder, you may be limited to storing physical media in one place. However, when it comes to a digital folder, there is no restriction on the number of files and the types of files that can be stored. What’s more, you can even store applications within folders on the computer.

Folders are also called directories because of the way they organize data within the file system of a storage device. All folders are subfolders or subdirectories of the root directory.

What’s interesting about folders is that while they may hold gigabytes of files, they themselves occupy no disk space.

Example of usage“You might store your digital photos in a ‘Pictures’ folder, your audio files in a ‘Music’ folder, and your word processing documents in a ‘Documents’ folder.”
