Firmware

Meaning – The term firmware, is defined as a proprietary code that is usually delivered as a microcode as part of an operating system. Firmware is more efficient than software loaded from an alterable medium and more adaptable to change than pure hardware circuitry.

The firmware is also defined as a software program or set of instructions programmed on a hardware device. It provides the necessary instructions for how the device communicates with the other computer hardware. It is found on the flash ROM section of the hardware. Unlike ROM, which is a read-only memory, the flash ROM can be erased and re-written, making it easy for developers and users to update the firmware without having to make any big-time changes to the hardware.

Example of usage“An example of firmware is the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) in read-only memory (ROM) on a PC motherboard.”
