Meaning – The term extranet, refers to a private network that people can use, to access certain information about the organization, without having to see all of the information about the organization. Usually, when it comes to a product-based company or even an educational institution, there is some information that is meant for the public eyes, while there is some information that needs to remain confidential.
In such cases, the organization in question adopts an extranet service that allows users to access the information that the organization feels they should be able to see. However, in order to access this information, there is usually a login page or some sort of authentication that the user has to go through, in order to gain access to the content.
Example of usage – “The gamer was required to login to the product company website in order to get information regarding the availability of the new console in his regional market.”
