Meaning – An expansion slot, is a hardware component found on computers, laptops, and mobile phones that are used to increase the storage capacity of the device. In the case of smartphones, the memory expansion is performed via SD cards of various specifications. There are smartphones today that can hold up to 512GB, all with a simple SD card in the expansion slot.
In computers, expansion slots can be of two types – One where the RAM can be upgraded and the other where the storage space of the computer can be expanded. These days, SD cards can be inserted into the expansion slot and can be used as a temporary expansion of storage or a permanent one.
Example of usage – “Since his smartphone was running of storage space, he decided to expand the storage space on the device by inserting a brand new SD card into the expansion slot.”
