Meaning – The word allocate, means to assign a resource to someone or something, to accomplish a task or objective. From the perspective of computers, the word allocate, means to assign a disk or diskette file, to perform a task.
Another explanation of this word is when you install an application on your PC, it is assigned memory according to the requirement. Similarly, any piece of data on the computer is allocated memory on the computer, and when you delete it from the system, the memory is freed and later, allocated to another piece of data or an application.
Sometimes, the PC may not have the required memory space to accommodate the application, and in such cases, the user must clear memory before attempting to install the application on the PC.
Example of usage – “I had to clear out a lot of memory on my PC in order to make space for the new application”.
