Sony Rumored to Debut ‘Spectral Super Resolution’ AI Upscaling for PS5 Pro

In a recent video, the YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID), a prominent source of hardware leaks and speculation, teased that the unconfirmed PS5 Pro could tout a technology dubbed “Spectral Super Resolution” or PSSR. This AI-powered upscaling technique would ostensibly allow Sony to reduce its reliance on third-party upscaling solutions like AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution currently implemented on the standard PS5.

While visuals purportedly comparing PSSR to AMD’s FSR 2.0 were presented, their static nature precludes substantive analysis until real-world performance can be evaluated. Nevertheless, the rumored specs attributed to PSSR’s backing silicon tantalize – an estimated 300 TOPS for 8-bit integer operations, 67 TFLOPS for half-precision compute, and a blistering 33.5 TFLOPS at full single-precision FP32.

Such performance figures, if accurate, would represent over a threefold increase compared to the original PS5’s compute capabilities. Coupled with GPU clocks potentially reaching 2.45GHz and 60 of 64 available compute units, the supposed PS5 Pro innards position it as a formidable AI/ML powerhouse.

Sony’s motivations for potentially developing its own upscaler are multifaceted – establishing technical supremacy over competitors, reducing third-party dependencies, and charting an increasingly AI-centric trajectory for its flagship gaming brand.

However, numerous uncertainties fog the viability of these PSSR disclosures. Sony has not formally acknowledged a PS5 Pro, let alone specifics like projected launch timelines or the implementation roadmap for putative upscaling tech.

Ultimately, the embracing of any such upscaling solution by game developers will prove pivotal in realizing its potential. As the technical marvel of contemporary gaming continues its relentless march, Sony’s rumored stratagem hints at prioritizing visual verisimilitude through innovative AI as a prime battleground for the medium’s next evolution.
